Fantastic Neighborhood 41: And the award goes to…

We awake from our turkey-induced comas to regale you fine listeners with tales of the Wii U, unsophisticated shooters (Black Ops), Syndicate, and more. And lest we not forget, it’s almost time for the Video Game Awards™, presented with Double XP™ by Mountain Dew™ and Doritos™: Suck it Down!™ But seriously, Fred and Jon make their VGA picks, including Journey for Best Shooter and Nolan North for Outstanding Achievement in Being the Fucking Man (and voice acting). Buy Spec Ops.

In Game Club, we’ve got Thirty Flights of Loving. Is it a game? Is it art? What’s a fair price point? Spoiler warning: your two favorite hosts disagree. Next week is the final chapter of The Walking Dead.

Fantastic Neighborhood 40: Gobble Gobble

This week we let the conversation just flow, which is to say we did not prepare any show notes ahead of time. We get into the Wii U some more, some comics, some comic book animated films, more Halo , and My Little Pony for Android. In Game Movie Club, we dissect Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade, including some deleted scenes. (You can totally email me if you want to see some creepy stuff). Next week, we’re playing 30 Flights of Loving.

Some Halo 4 Online Challenges are Broken [UPDATE]

Droppin the ball. Get it?

We don’t pretend to be a news site, but at least we can at least try to shine some light on the occasional issue. Halo4′s multiplayer has a veritable cornucopia of features. There’s competitive, there’s co-op, there’s a Flood mode. Seriously, there’s a ton of stuff here. The new Spartan Ops missions ties together new CG cut scenes with co-op gameplay challenges. It’s pretty neat, and I’m totally into it. Tying all the modes together is a singular XP system. As a bonus, and to keep users coming back, 343 Industries has set weekly challenges. Complete this chapter and get XP, kill this many Crawlers, get XP. You can see how this works.

What a badass.

But what happens when it doesn’t work? Users are complaining because one of the meatier challenges, “Heroic Episode,” simply isn’t unlocking. Completing chapter 2 of Spartan Ops on Heroic should grant the player the hefty sum of 3,000 XP, but nothing is happening. Multiple message board posts are mentioning it, but I haven’t been able to find any responses from 343. I also twice attempted to tweet them, but haven’t received a response.

Say what? No seriously, you guys, I think you broke something.

While the reviews and my personal experiences with the game suggest that 343 has managed to fill Bungie’s boots, there are obviously still some kinks to work out, as we’ve also heard reports of the Mountain Dex XP bonus program not working correctly.

UPDATE

Well, this is why we aren’t reporters. According to a 343 forum post, this is an issue with the notification not popping, but the XP is being awarded. I haven’t been able to verify this, but here you go:

“Spartan Ops Episode of Legend Weekly Challenge
Upon completion of the Episode of Legend Weekly Challenge, some players did not get a notification that they received 3,000 XP. However, if the challenge showed as completed on the Challenge page, the payout was issued. We are currently investigating why the notification did not appear in-game.”

Fantastic Neighborhood 39: The WiiU and Console Launch Hubris

While we try to feign interest in the impending WiiU release, Jon manages to stay busy with and Halo 4 and Fred continues to…um…I forget, actually. I should listen to him during the show. Oh yeah! He finished Enslaved, which we spoil for three whole minutes!

We’re marginally excited for Brown Thursday/Black Friday, but the crux of this episode is definitely the extended conversation about console launches of yore. We recount the historic first days of the NES, Atari Jaguar, Sega Saturn, N64, and Playstation 3. Will Nintendo follow in the footsteps of Sega? Or pull off another NES/Wii? All we know is hubris can catch the fuck up with you.

On the brighter (darker) side, Fred finished up Metro 2033 in Game Club. Next week, we watch another movie: Chasing Ghosts – Beyond the Arcade, which is definitely available on Netflix Instant.

We’re also having a bit of a contest. If you can figure out how this week’s musical selections (except our theme) tie to the show’s content, we will award you a copy of one of the three games recently removed from the market. So the first person to respond will get his or her choice of Tatsunoku vs. Capcom, Too Human, or X-Men Destiny. Email your answers to letters@fantasticneighborhood.com.

Fantastic Neighborhood 38: Halo 4 More Years

Welcome to the political throwdown. The election’s over, but the gaming goodness has just begun. While Fred skipped out on gaming, with the exception of seeing Wreck-It-Ralph, Jon dove straight into Halo 4, which won the election for his heart (this week). He kind of likes it. LEGO Batman 2: DC Superheroes and Borderlands 2 and Legends are charming third-party candidates. Batman is only $7.50 on Amazon right now. Fantastic Neighborhood also congratulates Maine State Senator Elect, and avid WoW player, Colleen Lachowicz.

Game Club gets its Russian on in Metro 2033. The conclusion will be next week. Speaking of next week, we’ll be doing a special on console launches, so call us with your console launch memories.

Oh, and the East Coast is still pretty fucked up, so donate a little cash, if you’re able. To make a quick $10 donation, text REDCROSS to 90999.

Fantastic Neighborhood 35: Gwar-sura’s Wrath

This week the show follows Fred’s adventures with Gwar and the games of NY ComicCon, including Halo 4, Hawken, and the Marvel MMO. Then Jon shares a little too much about the dark hold of classic game collecting. Continued rants about the lack of free time and the evil of game sales follows. In a very lively Game Club segment, we dissect the wacked-out brilliance of Asura’s Wrath. Lastly, we talk about the new DC fighting game, Injustice, and the not-so-great history of DC Comics games. FUN TIMES!

Next week’s Game Club is the conclusion of Asura’s Wrath. The third Part and all DLC content.

Writing About Games is Really Hard

I’ve been wanting to write a new article for the site for awhile now. We had a nice little run where we were writing a lot of opinion pieces, and getting a lot of new traffic, but as of late, we’ve gotten lazy. Maybe not lazy, but writing compelling articles that aren’t just rehashes of other peoples’ articles is rather difficult. Lazy would indicate we have the means to do so but not the will. It’s the other way around.
