Loot Crate Review – April 2015

What box did we get? Loot Crate “FANTASY” – April 2015
What is it? Loot Crate is a monthly themed subscription box that sends subscribers an assortment of toys and products. It is specifically for genre fans and often has exclusives.
What does it cost? From $17.95 to $19.95 monthly for the US, depending on your subscription level
Was this one worth it? Maybe, it will depend if your asking me that question now or a year from now

This months Loot Crate was themed “Fantasy” and had, obviously, a high fantasy theme. I feel like this box hits its marks theme wise, just not sure it hits it value wise.

Can’t talk about the box without talking about the contents though!

Dungeons & Dragons Ampersand shirt (Value – $10-15)

I don’t want to be hyperbolic but this is by far the best shirt they have done in any Loot Crate so far. It’s not a dumb mashup shirt, which has become pervasive in “nerd” culture as of late (oh you combined Mega Man and Wonder Woman to make Mega Woman. So cool guy!) and it is the kind of shirt that you can wear outside without being seen as a total shut in because it is a cool iconic design.

The Value is Approximate because there are any number of variations of this shirt you can buy from various sources, but since this is an officially licensed one it would probably sell for a bit more.

Exclusive Dragons and Dice Bow Tie (Value – Aprox. $6)

If the shirt was not overtly nerdy enough for you, this box has you covered. The double whammy of a bow tie and a dragons and dice motif should put you well over the top in the category of most obnoxius person in the room.

Princess Bride Playing cards (Value – $15 retail / Way cheaper on Ebay)

Full disclosure, I do not like The Princess Bride like some people LIKE this movie. It’s a fine and dandy movie and certainly should be in your film library, but to me it is on the same level as Legend or Time Bandits, not anywhere the level of cult status that some people assign to it.

That being said, a deck of cards is a deck of cards. This one is way over priced but at the same time this makes a fine birthday present for that friend you have, who whenever you part ways shouts “Have fun storming the castle.”

Harry Potter Luggage Tag (Value – Aprox. $8 going by eBay)

Not sure what to think about this, it is so very specific. The Venn diagram representing people who would want this is the intersecting point of Harry Potter nerd plus traveling to a place that would not steal this on principal plus not having friends with you that also subscribe to Loot Crate plus luggage, which is going to make it much harder for me to re-gift it.

Loot Crate Exclusive Game of Thrones USB Drive (Value – $15, explained below)

USB thumb drives are never really a great value, and then when you don’t have one it’s the worst thing in the world and you pray to the new gods and the old gods to provide you with one. This 4GB USB drive is cute, but realistically do you really want to be walking around with this novelty item in your pocket or would you rather spend $15 on a 32 gig USB 3 drive with a key ring that is half the size? Gift box item for sure.

I based the price on the average eBay costs I am seeing for this thing, so it is malleable and probably won’t remain there, and as time marches on 4 gigs will become even more laughable. Also, if you want a Stark Sigil USB you should probably just get this much nicer one.

Game of Thrones Magnet set (Value – Aprox. $8, explained below)

I love fridge magnets, because I have a fridge, and also a metal door and I never have enough magnets. Everyone can use magnets and this is an item that you can get away with being super fanboy nerdy about and no one will care because it’s just a magnet on a fridge.

I am basing the price on the fact that there is a fuller set of fridge magnets from GOT you can buy from HBO that has 3 more sigil magnets, but this set has the big ones you’re going to want. No one wants house Tully. No one. It’s a fucking trout.

Inflatable crown (Value – $5 at various retail places)

I don’t know, it’s basically a pool toy for children, and it’s also sadly sized for children because I can barely get this to stay on my done. It will likely just float around my office as a target to shoot off of people with nerf guns, so in that regard it is priceless.

So what was the value of this box?

Combined Retail Value: ~$72 with a big asterisk

If you go by the retail price / high end for all these items, this crate is a huge value explosion, and I’ll be honest for the shirt and fridge magnets alone I like what I got, but I just do not think this box had much going for it. Most of the items are going to drop in value significantly over time and there was nothing exclusive enough to make it feel like I got anything other than a value box, but I do think for some people this box will hit a lot of right correct notes.

If this box interested you, I would recommend you join Loot Crate.
